Dear Ms. Jourdain,  

What makes me a social scientist is that I love to stand up for injustice when I see it occurring. Often times, we forget that we the people have to make the decision to stand up and fight for what is wrong. Certain races for years have faced injustice and we should take the responsibility to raise awareness and to educate the public. Furthermore, as a social scientist, I can help raise awareness about the impact of technology in today’s society. My judgment and ethics will allow me to advocate or solve problems that I believe are most necessary. 

Social events or issues that I care about would be the issues that are occurring with president Donald Trump. He is trying to build a wall that can cause a lot of neglect to the emotions of the race being targeted. This country is made of millions of immigrants. Immigrant families are helping our economy and it is not fair to try and erase them. 

I am curious about the specific experiences that people have faced in their life that shaped them to be the person that they are today. When we see people in public. Some think that because they have a privilege they can treat other races however they wish to. And when you stand up and inform them that they are being racist they take it as a personal attack or harassment. Often times our socioeconomic status plays a big role in how we communicate with others. A lack of education and resources can cause a person to not have the best education and therefore do not have access to become future leaders. It’s interesting to see how people can rise above this and create a standard where they are untouchable in the sense that they have a certain level of power. And this commands attention to them. Moreover, when people use this power to better society and the nation it is commendable. 

My career goal is to help people in ways that will have a direct impact. Perhaps becoming a physician or psychologist will help me reach people. A personal hobby of mine is reading books and sing. Reading a book has the power to open up your mind and get your brain to start working so that you are more knowledgeable on various topics. Singing is something that I have been learning since I was a child. It is a skill that requires years of dedication and techniques. This, in fact, challenges my creative process and to better understand music. 

This semester I am looking forward to playing my role as a social scientist through fieldwork, research, interviews, and writing. Interacting with the students from my class will be a good exposure to the different types of behavior and cultures.  I would be scared to learn about something that would be very challenging to unfold. However, it is the job of a social scientist to look at a challenge based on many different factors. Additionally, I am scared about the research that is involved in this class because research is something that requires a lot of dedication to be able to truly understand a topic.

Summary of Letter of Introduction

This was the first writing piece I had done for my social sciences English class. I remember in my first semester English class I had a very similar assignment. This brought back memories of how I changed as a writer and what my views are now. I enjoy writing about this topic of what is a social scientist and the process of reading and trying to understand what I thought. Our professor was very helpful and guided us with any questions and even the layout of how our letter should be. This letter gave me a chance to reflect on who I am as a person and display what I wanted or expected of the learning outcomes in this class. It’s always nice when you are able to explore and talk a little about yourself. Now looking back I can see the role that I played as a social scientist. I had many interactions with new types of writing styles and assignments. In this assignment some difficulties that I encountered would be what social injustices do I see occurring in the world. It’s simple to just talk about yourself but when you have to really look into what kind of injustice is happening in the world it makes you question many of the things and try to articulate it in a smart way. I recall the research I did on race and how we should take a stand when we see that something wrong is happening. President Trump our current president was always making headlines so I decided that I would talk about the choices that he makes and what impact that has on the people. At first, I was not sure if I wanted to focus on that but it’s hard to deny that after he became president a lot of changes occurred. After narrowing down what I wanted to write about it made it easier to write it down.
